Signs of Termites in the home

Signs of termites in the home

As a home owner it's wise to have an annual pest inspection for peace of mind, health and financial security. It's one thing to have dirty cockroaches or spider problems but the damage to a property due to a termite infestation can cause serious financial problems so always keep your eyes open for signs of termites.

The problem with termites is they can cause substantial damage to a property before the home owner even notices. This is why these pests are known as the "silent destroyers" due to their ability to munch away at wood and flooring. This sort of damage can seriously compromise the structural integrity of a property.

Here are a few warning signs that termites may be present in a home:

  • Mud tubes on the exterior of the home. These are how termites reach a food source.

  • A hollow sound on soft wood in the home when tapped.

  • Darkening or blistering of wood structures.

  • Cracked or bubbling paint.

  • Mould to internal walls, ceilings or architraves.

  • Discarded wings near doors or on windowsills could indicate that termite alates have entered the property.

  • Peeling paint that resembles water damage.

  • Buckling wooden or laminate floor boards.

  • Loose tiles from the added moisture termites can introduce to your floor

  • Excessively squeaky floorboards
